This CH53 was the test aircraft used for Project Compare. On one side (white ball) there was a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system, and on the other side (grey ball) was an Active Gated Low Light Level Television System. My team flew over 200 test hours over maritime targets of opportunity along the East coast, at low altitudes, usually between the night hours of 2000 and 0400. Eventually the FLIR was determined to be the performance winner and thus paved the way for FLIRs to be installed on many Navy aircraft platforms.
