Close-up of the Iron Maiden, A total water immersion capsule designed by R. Flanagan Gray, formerly of the Aviation Acceleration Medical Laboratory (located at the human centrifuge at the Naval Air Development Center, Warminster, PA)
On December 7, 1958, Gray was immersed in water in the Iron Maiden, which was placed on a cradle hung at the 32 foot mark of the human centrifuge arm. He sustained 31.25 G of centrifugal acceleration for 5 seconds, a record which still stands today. Two other researchers rode in the Iron Maiden to 26 G and 28G, respectively.
