The NADC was heavily involved with anti-submarine detection RDT&E. The S-2 was, in the 60's, the Navy's carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft. For test & evaluation engineers and technicians the plane was a bit cramped. The P2V was the primary land-based anti-submarine aircraft; even so, the modified Constellation (NC-121) was probably doing a lot of the testing as personnel could stand up and walk around inside the plane.
